Podcast Topic(s)

There was an article published in Time recently, which compared The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (the notable launch title for the Nintendo Switch) to Ultima 6: The False Prophet. Not in a thematic sense, mind you, but in what might be an even more appealing sense: the way the worlds, in both games, are open to the player, and reward…let’s call it tinkering by the player. (One particularly amusing example of this, in Breath of the Wild, is how the cuccos can be weaponized.)

The map for Breath of the Wild is apparently quite huge, by the way. And the game itself has been pulling in a lot of favourable reviews. It’s also worth noting, for you retro-gamers out there, that the first prototypes for Breath of the Wild were built as an 8-bit RPG.

And speaking of the Switch, it makes perfect sense that Nintendo would choose to coat the game cartridges with a bittering agent, the better to make them unpalatable to small children. It’s a nice design touch.
