This episode was originally going to focus on the topic of Sacrifice and the necessity of practicing this Virtue at this point in time, as the world continues to deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, inspired by this recent episode of the Catholic Bytes podcast, the topic of discussion today is, instead, Humility.
The episode linked above focuses on the subject of baseball, and in particular on certain players who have made it into the Hall of Fame. One of these, Ryne Sandberg, stood out as a particular example of Humility: in addition to being an excellent fielder (seriously: his record at second base is probably as close to perfect as is humanly possible), he also developed and trained a significant talent at bunting. He could have easily been one of those players who accumulated a significant home run record, but he recognized that his team — the Chicago Cubs — had a need for someone who could consistently bring players home from third base. And so he developed his skill at bunting, and became that player.
We might call that “leadership by humility”, and it’s an attitude well worth emulating at this time. Whether it’s becoming accustomed to wearing masks, obeying closure orders for parks and beaches, following the newly-placed directional arrows in the aisles of grocery stores, or whatever other measures are required to combat the spread of COVID-19, it behooves us at this time to learn those things, and to become as adept at them as we can, in order to keep ourselves and others safe.
