Continuing on the theme of Humility, this week Withstand the Fury Dragon considers the example of St. Catherine of Siena, a Catholic saint and one of the Doctors of the Catholic Church. And to be fair, wholly apart from her religion or her sainthood, Catherine is a profound and interesting example of the power — yes, power — of being humble and holy. Because, when we consider the social status of women in the 1300s, we wouldn’t expect any woman — let alone a layperson, a French peasant girl — to have the ability or clout to move even the Pope to action.
And yet, Catherine did just that, urging the Pope in her day to take action on a variety of issues that were affecting the Church during late 1300s.
We can look to Catherine for an example of how we — as the coronavirus pandemic continues, as economies attempt to restart and as requirements for the wearing of protective equipment shift based on new information about the virus — can urge each other to do what is prudent to help consign this pandemic to history. Catherine’s approach was effective because it was humble: she was never accusatory, her own practices aligned with what she urged others to do, and she urged others to do what was holy first and foremost…not out of obligation or duty, but as the fruit of a desire to pursue the good. She was unfailingly respectful, and she strove to communicate with people in their humanity; she did not hector or lecture, but was instead empathetic.
All good things, to be sure…yet so often, that is the approach that is not taken — even by us here — when discussing current events on social media.
