After missing the Lent and Easter seasons in 2022 (and the Advent and Christmas seasons in 2021) — which will now be known as the lost thirteenth and fourteenth seasons! — Byte-Sized Virtue is back for Advent and Christmas and the leap into 2023. This time around, we’ll be discussing Spirituality, which in Ultima lore is defined as:

…the concern with one’s inner being and how one deals with Truth, Love, and Courage.

Though, if pressed, credit has to be given to Ultima 9’s expanded presentation of the Virtue:

Spirituality is the urge towards steady improvement of the soul. The spiritual are never sated in their hunger for Truth, Love, and Courage. From whatever place the Principles are viewed, spiritual energy rights them into proper balance.

This take on Spirituality reminded me greatly of Scouts Canada’sSpirituality Badge, which I’ve had the opportunity to help a few youth earn over the years. Scouts Canada still emphasizes spirituality as one of its key program elements, but does so in a way that is both open to youth who follow a wide range of religions, as well as to youth who don’t follow any particular religion.

And so, using the badge requirements as something of a framework, let’s take a look at just what it means to explore Spirituality, and why it’s fitting that it’s a Virtue in Britannia.
