Ultima IX: Redemption was, during the years it was in development, one of the most ambitious Ultima fan projects going; news from its developers (who came to be known as the Titans of Ether) was always greeted with excitement, and every new glimpse we got of their progress in remaking Ultima 9 suggested that we were in for an epic experience….whenever the mod was released, that is.
Because Redemption wasn’t a standalone game unto itself. A spin-off of the RPG Maker-based Alter-U9 project, it was being developed as a mod for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. And its ambition was probably the death of it: the team intended to create a massive, sprawling realization of Britannia, with numerous massive cities people by many hundreds of NPCs. Add to that a significant amount of turmoil in the project team proper, and it’s a wonder that Redemption remained in development for as long as it did. Many projects with more limited scopes folded long before Redemption did.
But ultimately, Redemption did fold; it was cancelled — and all of its development assets released to the community — and its team instead opted to put their talents to use creating a new game using the Unreal Engine: Corven – Path of Redemption.
So, in this episode, Chlorthos Dragon joins us again to discuss the storied, troubled development and cancellation of the project he helped found.
