This week, I thought I’d resurrect — and bring to the podcast audience — an interview that I did with Bill Randolph (who worked as the lead programmer on Ultima 9 at Origin Systems for much of its development) several years ago.
Bill, for his part, has had a varied and interesting career in game development; he has worked for Westwood Studios, Wizards of the Coast, NCSoft, Super Happy Fun Fun, Kingisle Entertainment, Trion Worlds, Ticom Geomatics, and even returned to the employ of Electronic Arts for a time to work on Command & Conquer Generals 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. He is currently working at Blizzard Entertainment.
The questions for this interview were crowdsourced from the Ultima fandom, and cover just about every imaginable aspect of Ultima 9 and its development (especially the technology behind it!), as well as the internal goings-on at Origin during the late 1990s; Bill graciously gave an answer to just about all of them, and you’ll hopefully enjoy his blend of humorous good cheer and wistful recollection throughout the discussion.
The full transcript of the interview can be found at the Ultima Codex.
