Nox Archaist is a new 8-bit CRPG being developed for the Apple ][ platform by 6502 Workshop, a team of spare-time enthusiast developers. Heavily inspired by Ultima — especially Ultima 5 — the game tries to imagine where 8-bit RPGs would have gone had MS-DOS-based PCs not superseded the Apple ][ as a gaming platform.
And since it’s only fitting that a game which homages this golden age of RPG development should have a stylish box, a cloth map, manuals, and other feelies, the developers are currently in the midst of crowdfunding — via Kickstarter — the production of a limited run of boxed copies of the game. The campaign is already a success, having raised over $31,000 USD (the base goal was $8,500 USD). But if you’d like to nab yourself a copy of the game’s box and feelies, you’ll want to head on over to Kickstarter to make a pledge ($59 USD is the minimum spend for a physical reward).
This episode is an interview with Mark Lemmert of 6502 Workshop; he’s one of the lead developers working on Nox Archaist. Over the course of an hour, he discusses the inspiration for the game, some of its underlying technology — and the technical limitations of the chosen platform — and even lets on that Richard Garriott’s alter-ego Lord British will appear as an NPC in the game (albeit this news already broke last week, so its treatment as a surprise herein is a bit past due).
