Podcast Topic(s)

Continuing on the theme of SSSH episodes being topical buffets, this episode — featuring, for its duration, WtF Dragon, Harmony Dragon, Draxenath and Golem Dragon — begins with a re-cap of WtF’s recent vacation to San Diego, California (and to both Disneyland and Legoland), as well as some discussion of the health issues that have hit his family this year (some of which were precursors to the decision to take such an elaborate vacation).

But soon thereafter, the discussion turns toward gaming; Final Fantasy 14 gets discussed for a while, as do the (lame) login rewards for Shroud of the Avatar in July. Portalarium’s still-outstanding SEC filings also come up, and we wonder at why the company might be delaying getting those done. #bandwidth

Our general disgust with the July login rewards also leads to a broader discussion of the practice of asset re-use by game developers, and it is noted that Path of Exile is able to achieve quite a lot of actually splendid things by reusing and reworking 3D assets. From there, we discuss internet speeds and terrible ISPs, before returning to the topic of certain 3D assets and wondering at what sorts of physiological changes might be forced upon certain of the Avatar’s companions in a hypothetical AAA remake of Ultima 6.

And as if that weren’t enough, we touch on issues such as allergies and staple foods, and the tension between accommodating the allergic sensitivities of youth and the economic needs of families looking to provide their children with an inexpensive protein source. Toasters and toaster ovens, grocery stores and the various product lines they carry, and a particular prank WtF’s wife once pulled with some red bean popsicles also merit mention, and we marvel at the broad, broad range of products that Hello Kitty appears on, especially in Japan (which is evidently trying to deal with rising STI rates in urban areas with some very…inventive solutions). We also get onto the topic of rail history in the US and Canada, and of fireworks and the antics that attend 4th of July celebrations. Finally, we briefly pick apart the idea of combat archery (look it up!), before WtF offers his brief review of the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction at Disneyland.
