Podcast Topic(s)

This week’s episode begins with a discussion — between Helgraf Dragon, WtF Dragon, and Goldenflame Dragon — about The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, why Lego’s take on Batman is the best, and why The Lego Movie 2 was just not as good as the first one. There’s also some discussion about whether William Shatner would make a good Batman, especially if Mark Hamill were to reprise his role as the Joker. Other movies that have come out recently — The Rise of Skywalker, Frozen 2 — also get discussed.

The discussion then turns to Roll20 and the challenges of playing Dungeons & Dragons remotely. From there, after touching on movies a bit more, the group geek out about The Mandalorian and some of the other Star Wars shows that Dave Filoni has produced.

Video and image scaling, and the (in)ability to scale effectively in video conferencing apps (and education software) comes up in a moment of frustration, as does some of the security woes that the Zoom videoconferencing software has experienced lately. The discussion then ranges over a few other things — at the time this episode was recorded, WtF Dragon’s wife had been asked for an interview by the social media team for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s (CBC) long-running period drama, Murdoch Mysteries; that interview has since taken place.

Much of the latter half of the episode, however, focuses on Goldenflame’s Ultima-inspired RPG, The Dark Unknown, which he recently delayed the release date for. He discusses some of the challenges that contributed to that decision, and talks about building new content for the game, avoiding (or suffering through) feature creep, the difficulty of building a walkthrough when content is dynamic & variable, and the difficulty of contracting outsidehelp/talent. This, in turn, leads into a more introspective discussion: since every project at some point drives its creator to rely on others for help, feedback, and/or input, are the things we build really built solely by us?
