This is our first recorded episode of 2021, and we’ve gotten rusty!
Helgraf Dragon kicks things off by discussing Hero Quest, the board game (and the reason Sierra had to rename Hero’s Quest to Quest for Glory), and WtF Dragon reminisces about a variant of the game that his friends cooked up, centered around the theme of TROGDOR! the Burninator. (There’s now an official boardgame.)
This in turn leads to a discussion of Homestar Runner and the StrongBad Emails, merchandising, and a couple of other cartoon properties that handled licensing very differently (and with very different outcomes): Calvin and Hobbes, and Garfield. For some reason, the topic then turns to laugh tracks in comedy shows…and whether they continue to be comedy shows when the laugh tracks are removed (spoiler: they do not).
Chlorthos Dragon spends a good chunk of the episode messing around with various mods for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and this leads to discussions about modding various games…and how this can often lead to trouble (e.g. resource conflicts, unpredictable crashes, etc.). WtF also complains about the difficulty scaling in Homeworld Remastered, which completely threw off his strategy for passing the first game’s third mission.
