Podcast Topic(s)
This podcast was originally intended to be a discussion about Ultima Forever, to belatedly mark the one-year anniversary of that game’s closure and shutdown. However, since it is the occasion of Ultima 4’s thirtieth anniversary this week — tomorrow, if you’re listening to this on Patreon, or today if you’re listening to it on the Codex — we decided to switch topics and discuss Ultima 4 itself. (We’ll get to Ultima Forever next week.)
Of course, absolutely no show notes were prepared for a discussion about Ultima 4, so this episode is entirely off the cuff…and it probably shows. (Also, I think I used the wrong microphone for recording.)
However, if you’ve read Linguistic Dragon’s article series on Ultima 4, you’ll have some idea of what we discussed:
- Ultima IV: Opening Thoughts
- Ultima IV: Justice Prevails
- Ultima IV: Starting the Quest
- Ultima IV: The Path to Virtue
- Ultima IV: A Bit Partial
- Ultima IV: Always More to Learn
- Ultima IV: Enlightened
- Ultima IV: Into the Depths
- Ultima IV: The Keys to Victory
- Ultima IV: The End and the Beginning
- Ultima IV: Closing Thoughts
As well, some of the framing of the discussion — e.g. the historical context of Ultima 4’s creation — can be found in The Digital Antiquarian’s article The Road to IV, and some of the concepts we discuss can also be found in Peter Tieryas’ What’s the Point of an RPG Without a Main Villain? How Ultima IV Changed the Game. We also discuss Brainy Gamer’s now-infamous Unplayable blog post, which talks about some of the issues modern gamers experience when they are introduced to Ultima 4 for the first time.

Ultima 4 was released thirty years ago, if you can believe that. As such, the SSSH crew discuss the game, its legacy, and whether or not modern gamers can handle it.
