This is a remix of two now-ancient (you can tell by the audio quality!) episodes of the podcast: Episode 5 (a discussion about — what else? — Ultima 5) and Episode 9 (a dramatic reading by Linguistic Dragon of a piece of fan fiction of his own creation, The Fall of Astaroth).
The Ultima 5 discussion ranges over a variety of subjects, as is the norm, as the various participants pick apart the game and ask what some of the more obvious thematic influences were. We look at some of the ways in which the design of Ultima 5 was very different from its predecessors in the series (e.g. the simplification of character classes, the first forays into world interactivity, and NPC schedules), and of course we discuss the treasures (“feelies”) included in the game’s box.
Also up for discussion is the gameplay of Ultima 5, cheats and bugs that exist in the game, and what its legacy was for the Ultima series…and for gaming in general.
The Fall of Astaroth follows this lengthy discussion; it is, as noted, a dramatic reading of a piece of Ultima 5-based fan fiction. Penned and read by Linguistic Dragon, and edited together by Boolean Dragon, it is a one-of-a-kind thing that has yet to be re-created on Spam Spam Spam Humbug…and it’s well worth a listen.
