Podcast Topic(s)

This episode begins with Harmony Dragon, Golem Dragon, WtF Dragon, and Goldenflame Dragon discussing weather in their respective locales, before WtF Dragon brings up the subject of Microsoft’s xCloud game streaming service, the Android app for which recently became available. There’s also a bit of discussion about the inner workings of xCloud blade servers, before the topic shifts rather suddenly to movies.

Specifically, the topic shifts to bad movies: Demolition Man, Highlander 2 and its sequels (not to mention the TV series), and a few others. We also discuss The Labyrinth a bit, because Jim Henson was awesome and made some very strange and wonderful films in his day.

Goldenflame then talks about his forays into the Nox Archaist beta, and someone asks if he’s encountered Lord British in the game yet (since Richard Garriott did agree to allow the character to appear in Nox Archaist). This leads into an extensive discussion of the various means by which Lord British can be killed off in various Ultima games. We also discuss the differences in Garriott’s storytelling style versus that of infrequent-but-delightful podcast guest Dr. Cat.

The topic of breaking games also comes up — we discuss things like engine and general performance issues stemming from object permanence and the ability to manipulate objects (especially in a 3D space — see Ultima 9), and how tracking such data leads to save file (and general game file) size bloat. We also talk a bit about people — like DOUG the Eagle Dragon — who play games with the specific intent of breaking them, but in a way that still leaves them able to be completed by some means.

WtF Dragon briefly gripes about some issues that have cropped up related to moderation on the Shroud of the Avatar forums and Discord server, which leads into a broader discussion about the toxicity that often crops up in competitive/PVP online play.

The episode then wraps up in a most unfortunate way, when a discussion about the…character customization options in CD Projekt RED’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 gets sidetracked by Helgraf Dragon.
